19th October 2023 I was in Midsund to do a workshop about petroglyphs at a school (through Den Kulturelle Skolesekken). Teachers at the school told me about some petroglyphs on the island that I was unaware of, and gave me directions to the site. I traveled to see them on the same day.
The two petroglyphs at Reitaneset in Midsund were discovered in 1965. There isn’t a lot of information about these particular carvings online, and I was unable to find any estimated date for when the figures were carved.
As with many rock art figures, it is also difficult to see what exactly these figures are supposed to depict. One source online says the figure to the left might be a bird, and the figure to the right could be a fish (halibut).
