Archive: Noroff 3d Film Production – Render passes and After Effects

This was not for one of the mandatory assignments, but we had a lecture about putting render passes together in After Effects. Then we got a 3ds Max scene with models as a starting point to play around with and try making it have the same “feel” as a movie scene of our own choosing. The scene and models were not made by me, but the way they are set up, the camera, the lighting and rendering, was done by me

The Alley of Flying Daggers

The first rendering effect I choose to try recreating was this still from House of Flying Daggers:

Reference image from The House of Flying Daggers.

And what I ended up with was this:

Final render: Alley of Flying Dagges.

The characters and scene is obviously very different from the reference, but it was fun trying to still make something so differerent still be similar through the rendering.

These are the render passes that was put together for the above image:

Diffuse
Light
Shadow
Ambient occlusion
Z Depth

Coraline Alley

After finishing the above image, I wanted to try something more complex and decided to try recreating the mood of the Coraline film poster:

Here’s what I got:

Final render: Coraline Alley

Render passes:

Diffuse
Light
Specular
Atmosphere
Ambient occulsion
Z depth
